The Age Friendly Cities and Counties programme has made significant progress over recent years in advancing the issue of creating an age friendly Ireland. Following the establishment of age friendly alliances in every local authority, local strategies have been developed that are making a real difference to the lives of increasing numbers of older people. The Age Friendly Ireland Programme has been supporting the delivery of training to key practitioners whose actions and decisions influence the lives of older people in Ireland. The content of the training has been informed following liaison with the National Disability Authority/ CEUD and with the Housing Agency. The Housing Agency are delighted to provide funding to expand the delivery of these workshops across the country.

Who Is It For? These workshops are aimed at AHBs, Local Authorities and the private sector including designers, developers and policy makers. The workshops will be of particular use to: *Engineers, Managers and Architects engaged in design and or working in the housing and general infrastructure area
* Planners particularly those involved in the forward planning and the Development/Local Area Plan process and those from all stakeholders involved in planning consultations and decision making
* Architectural or Housing Technicians in relevant departments above
* Other Housing practitioners and Clerks of Work
* Access / Access Cert Officers
* Building Control/Quality Officers
* LCDC/ PPAN/Social Inclusion staff and members
* AHB and Private Sector staff
* Senior staff representatives particularly those overseeing some of the above areas and/or engaged in policy making, senior management or delivery.
* Age friendly designated staff members Elected representatives and members of the Older Persons Council
Delivery Method This is a half day interactive workshop which is shaped to meet specific needs in an organisation. The workshops are delivered by the former County Manager of Cavan County Council, Jack Keyes. Jack's background in Engineering positions allows him to critically advise key stakeholders on the importance of building sustainable environments that will future proof Ireland for demographic change. His approach is driven by a desire to unlock the potential in individuals and stakeholder teams to positively shape localities. He has an in-depth understanding of the policy framework that shapes actions in housing and the public realm.
Course Content The training draws on new and existing material relating to the area of housing. Drawing on universal design principles and referring to Part M requirements it will cover the learning of the recent SLIOTAR report on age friendly housing and other codes and regulations. Among the material referred to will be the 2015 Universal Design guidelines and recent developments in housing provision. It will consider physical, technical, social and cost interventions. The material will also draw on current thinking and sets out the common principles between provision for older people and people with disabilities. A checklist of good practice in developing housing will be provided to aid staff in their future design and management of accommodation provision. In summary it will provide:
The second and more minor section of the training will focus on the public realm. Age friendly practices around public seating, toilets, parking, pedestrian crossings, parks and green areas, location of bins and others are covered. It will discuss the findings of recent walkability surveys and research across Ireland and summarise feedback from hundreds of older people about the positive and not so positive elements of their everyday environment.
• Key outcomes from the SLIOTAR research programme covering 4 housing models highlighting the key recommendations for future builds in terms of physical, social, technological and cost considerations
• Current findings from “Age Friendly in the Public Realm” guide which was launched by Minister Damien English in 2016
• Background on universal design including reference to the recent CEUD material on universal design technical guidelines and Part M regulations.
• Update on the practical implications of recent policy changes including Housing for Older People- Choosing the right home or me – Joint Policy Statement from Depts Health and Housing (June 2018)
